Healthcare Facility in the Philippines Scores a Win

Guimaras provincial hospital

Our healthcare facility in the Philippines scores a win! My wife, diagnosed with dengue fever and pneumonia, was admitted to our local provincial hospital in Guimaras this past Wednesday evening. She had a dangerously low white blood platelet count of 106. It was now Thursday morning and the attending physician walked into our room around 11:15 am. This was the first time we had seen the doctor since being admitted. I was praying for some good news.

Scammers and Would-Be Thieves in Bacolod City

bacolod sincere drug store

During a recent shopping sojourn to Bacolod City, the “City of Smiles,” my asawa and I were impressed by several things. The friendly people and the stores that actually hired more mature workers, impressed me. The public transportation system was cheap and easy to use. The cab drivers were honest. The Check Inn Pension House where we stayed was affordable and centrally located and had a decent restaurant where we had a couple of meals. But two incidents during our three day stay are worth noting, especially to any expats that might be planning to visit Bacolod. masskara festival in bacolod city

Riding the Pump Boat on the Iloilo Strait Back to Mango Land

pump boat outside Ortiz Wharf in Iloilo

My asawa and I were riding the pump boat on the Iloilo Strait back to Mango Land, Guimaras, the island province in Western Visayas of the Philippines that we retired to over five years ago. After a shopping spree in Iloilo City, we hired a pump boat at Ortiz Wharf in Iloilo to haul our new Samsung washer, Samsung DVD Home Entertainment System, and Magic Sing Karaoke back to “The Farm” where we currently reside.

Shopping in Iloilo City for the American Expat

Shopping  in Iloilo City. Whenever the word “shopping” is mentioned, my spouse’s eyes light up like a Christmas tree on shabu. And incidentally, since this is September, one of the “Ber” months, Christmas season has officially started in the Philippines, which has the longest Christmas season in the world. Be prepared to hear “Jingle Bell Rock” 24/7 in all the big malls now until early January.

STATLAB in Iloilo City Got the Job Done. New Ultrasound Results

Statlab Clinic in Iloilo City

After an extremely frustrating visit for an ultrasound at the Centri Clinical Laboratory in San Miguel, Jordan, Guimaras, my asawa and I took a banca boat to nearby Panay Island. Thanks to a tip from British expat Keith, who also lives on our island province, I resolved to check out a new healthcare clinic. I am delighted to proclaim that Statlab in Iloilo City got the job done. I was able to receive new ultrasound results for a recent kidney stone attack.

The Great Guimaras Ultrasound Gaffe: The Kano Loses His Cool

If this were a website where more colorful language was allowed, the title for this post would certainly not have read “The Great Guimaras Ultrasound Gaffe.”  But you can bet there were some phrases I uttered this past Saturday at a local laboratory  that cannot be repeated on this site or in front of any nuns or preachers of the Gospel. Merchant marines? Yeah, no problem.

Guimaras Power Scheduled to be Restored this Saturday

Guimaras power scheduled to be restored this Saturday? 8:20 am this past Friday our scheduled rotational brownout arrived. I had already tipped off my asawa of my intention to visit our local power provider when the next outage darkened our door. I traded my standard issue expat uniform, tank top, cargo shorts and slippers for a t-shirt with sleeves and my new Jag jeans. This was a formal visit to our island province’s utility company.
