Iloilo City Crackdown on Illegal Indians

Iloilo City Crackdown on Illegal Indians

FEATURED
ILOILO City – The Bureau of Immigration is investigating 32 Indian nationals in Iloilo province for alleged illegal activities. Unlike so-called "Sanctuary Cities" in the States, their immigration documents will be reviewed for any criminal acts. Its an Iloilo City crackdown on illegal Indians as ordered by BI Commissioner Jaime Morente. (more…)
Crusty Old Expat’s Antisocial Ways

Crusty Old Expat’s Antisocial Ways

FEATURED
Anyone that knows me wouldn’t be surprised by the title of this post: “Crusty Old Expat’s Antisocial Ways.” It doesn’t bother me that I’m probably the only person in the Philippines that isn’t on Facebook. We rarely have friends over. Pool parties are limited to close relatives now. And I haven’t been shopping in nearby Iloilo City for weeks. (more…)
Buying Pirated DVDs in the Philippines

Buying Pirated DVDs in the Philippines

FEATURED
After a few recent online articles regarding the seizure of millions of pesos worth of pirated DVDs in Iloilo City and Bacolod, I have to wonder. While the reports don’t indicate who purchased the illegal videos, I imagine a few foreigners have bought a pirated digital video disc or two. Simple Man. Simple Life.

Simple Man. Simple Life.

FEATURED
American expat in the Philippines. A Simple Man. A Simple Life. No one has threatened to kill me recently. I’ve only had to yell at one jeepney operator blocking our main street in downtown San Miguel, Guimaras, the other day. No trips to nearby Iloilo City in about a month. I wish I could report more exciting events but I can’t. (more…)
“Good Day”Coffee’s Amazing Health Benefits

“Good Day”Coffee’s Amazing Health Benefits

FEATURED
Years ago when I worked for AT&T back in Central Illinois, I would kick start my mornings with an icy cold can of Diet Coke. There was a drive-up coffee shop on Sixth Street in Springfield only a few blocks from my work. But I didn’t want to miss out on my free parking spot on the street. There were no parking meters five blocks from my job, so I never stopped for a cup of “Joe.”  I wasn't about to pay 30 bucks a month for a parking spot on a lot. Plus, a coffee would have cost me about two or three bucks back then, too lavish for my tight-fisted ways. (more…)
8-Year Goal Realized: Skipping Iloilo and Shopping Local

8-Year Goal Realized: Skipping Iloilo and Shopping Local

FEATURED
Regular consumers of “Philippines Plus” know that I’m a crusty old expat. Sure, I could pretend that I never get irritated and that I’m always whistling “Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah.” But sometimes that bluebird on my shoulder takes a crap. However, not today, O True Believers, for on this Sunday, October 15th, 2017, an 8-year goal has been realized. Yes, we are skipping Iloilo City and doing the bulk of our shopping on our island province of Guimaras.  My asawa can now take our Aurora Blue Ford Ranger into the local market on our island province since our Governor and his Provincial Engineering Office took care of repairing our former muddy, rut-ridden road. “Would Jesus Ride Jeepneys in the Philippines?” You can tell a guy has way too much time on his hands when he starts asking himself questions like this. However, unproductive mitts are the devil’s sweatshop. Better to keep the ol' noggin' working at my advanced age. 10 Best Reasons to Never Visit Guimaras, Philippines

10 Best Reasons to Never Visit Guimaras, Philippines

FEATURED
I've lived in the Philippines with my Filipina wife for over eight years now. We've spent six of those years on a tiny island province called Guimaras in Western Visayas. Here's my "10 Best Reasons to Never Visit Guimaras, Philippines." 1. Sunsets uglier than dog crap on the bottom of your cheap-ass vinyl slippers you got from the local ukay-ukay store. 2. Projectile-vomiting views like this found on the Iloilo Strait between Guimaras and Iloilo City, the "most-shabulized" city in the Philippines. (Hey, I didn't call Iloilo City that, President Duterte put that tag on them.) 3. Irritating locals at Raymen Beach who even flash a smile at Crusty Old Expats. 4. Sheeesh! Even foreigners with a face like a dog's rear-end can get pretty girls on the beach to pose for them. 5. ...
