Have you ever wondered how many foreigners are living in the Philippines? For example, how many Chinese, Americans, Brits, Australians, etc. are living in this Southeast Asian archipelago? First of all, the current population of the Philippines is 109,678,880 as of Monday, July 27, 2020. Moreover, that data comes from Worldometer.  It’s their estimate from the latest United Nations data. Hence, that ranks the Philippines number 13 in the list of countries by population.

How Many Foreigners Living in the Philippines?

However, how many foreigners are living in the Philippines? Is it a significant amount? Based on the 2010 Census of Population and Housing (CPH), the number of foreign citizens in the country was 177,368 as of May 2010. They comprised only 0.2 percent of the total household population. The lead photo in this post features some of my own extended family in Guimaras. Of course, next to me is my lovely spouse, “The Sainted Patient Wife,” Photo taken years before current lockdown situation.

Three in ten foreign citizens (31.1 %) were residing in National Capital Region (NCR) at the time of the census. Those residing in the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao made up 22.3 percent of the total foreign citizens. Region III had 9.0 percent, Region IVA had 8.4 percent, and Region VII had 6.0 percent of the total foreign citizens. Region IX had the least proportion at 0.5 percent.

Western Visayas, Region VI, is where our island province of Guimaras is located. Region VI had a 5.9 percentage of foreigners back in 2010. That’s me, “The Kano,” with a local Army unit in the above photo.

Majority of foreign citizens come from the United States of America

The largest number of foreign citizens in the country came from the United States of America (29,959 persons). The next largest numbers came from China (28,750 persons), Japan (11,583 persons), and India (8,963 persons.)

Included in this census were citizens of foreign countries who had resided in the Philippines for at least a year from their arrival. Included also were those planning to stay for at least a year. Excluded were members of diplomatic missions and non-Filipino members of international organizations. Also excluded were foreign visitors who had stayed for a year.

Census Data Questionnaire

“Is __________ a citizen of the Philippines?” was one of the 2010 Census questions. Asked of all household members was this question. This question determined which household members were Filipino citizens and those who were not. Asked of non-citizens was the question “What country is __________ a citizen of?” Hence, this determined what household members were citizens of a foreign country.

In this census, there were 92,097,978 household population. Of this total, 177,368 were citizens of foreign countries. Among the foreign citizens, 24.8 percent had no response to the question on country of citizenship (classified under “Not Reported.”)

Citizenship is the legal nationality of a person. A citizen is a legal national of the country at the time of census. Moreover, an alien is a non-national of the country. Consequently, data on citizenship allows the classification of the population into citizens and aliens.

2020 Census Delayed due to Coronavirus

Hence, that information, from the Philippine Statistic Authority, PSA, is already over 10 years old. The 2020 Census has been delayed due to the coronavirus. Scheduled originally to begin May 04, 2020. Delayed now until the current community quarantines end.

Here’s a press release from that 2010 Census, again from the Philippine Statistic Authority:

How Many Foreigners Living in the Philippines?

In conclusion, if you’re a foreigner already living in the Philippines, how does your home country fit into the picture? In Guimaras, there’s been estimates of up to 300 foreigners living in our island province. While I’ve never met a total of 300 expats on our island province, there are some who would rather stay at home, especially during these trying times.
