Of course, “FPJ’s Ang Probinsyano” is still on the air as of this update. However if ABS-CBN, the network that airs the popular Filipino TV show, doesn’t get their franchise renewed, Cardo and crew could be put out of operation for good at the end of March 2020.
ABS-CBN’s Franchise Renewal in Jeopardy
Here’s the scoop. ABS-CBN’s franchise to operate in the Philippines ends on March 31, 2020. There have been several bills in the Philippine legislature calling for the network’s franchise renewal. However, no action on the renewal is taking place at this time in the legislature.
However, ABS-CBN has a huge problem. Philippine President Duterte has already told the Lopez-family led company to sell their company. Duterte is going to make sure the franchise will not get renewed by the House of Representatives. President Duterte has a super majority in the House and his supporters control the Senate.
Duterte claims the network took money for his campaign ads back in 2016 but never ran his political ads. Moreover, the Solicitor General is threatening to go the Supreme Court to remove ABS-CBN’s franchise before their actual franchise expires at the end of March.
The Philippine Congress has just gone back to work after their extended Christmas break. No one in the House leadership is pushing to even bring the franchise bills up for discussion. I’ve been following politics for over 10 years in the Philippines. I would bet that the President’s wishes to not renew the franchise will be followed.
Consequently, ABS-CBN’s programming could end on March 31, 2020, unless another network like TV-5 could purchase the rights to broadcast the ABS-CBN programs on their network. “FPJ’s Ang Probinsyano” to be extended beyond March 31, 2020? That remains to be seen.
Here’s the original article I posted on 05-17-2019.
A recent column by Nickie Wang in the Manila Standard piqued my curiosity. Veteran actress Lorna Tolentino revealed an interesting nugget of information in the Standard article. Could “FPJ’s Ang Probinsyano” be extended until September 2019? (Lead Graphic: Dreamscape Facebook)
“FPJ’s Ang Probinsyano” Extended until September 2019?
Tolentino has been on my favorite Filipino television show, “FPJ’s Ang Probinsyano,” the past few months. She’s been portraying the character of “Lily,” a money collector for a drug syndicate.
This part of the “Very Wang” column intrigued me the most:
“I started on March 1. I’m supposed to be in the series for only one month. But they got intrigued with the character so they wanted me to extend until September,” she revealed.
“Ang Probinsyano” not ending after mid-term Elections?
“Will ‘Ang Probinsyano’ Bite the Bullet after May 2019 Elections?” According to published reports in Bandera, my favorite Filipino show was going to end sometime after the May 2019 elections. The elections are now over.
Various actors on the show, including Senator-elect Lito Lapid, had to be killed off before official election campaigning began.
“Just to be safe, after elections.”
That’s what Dreamscape Entertainment head Deo Endrinal was reported to have said in an interview after being asked when the show would end. Dreamscape is the production company for “Ang Probinsyano.”
The PhilippineNews.com stated that Endrinal did not give any specific date. He just affirmed that it was going to end after the mid-term elections.
In fact, ABS CBN also admitted that they could not afford to continue the big-budget show for more than three years in primetime. However, the program is the highest-rated show in Filipino television history and has to rake in some big advertising bucks.
So for now, as I’ve done for the past three years plus, I’ll have our TV tuned to Channel 2, ABS CBN on our Cignal satellite network around 7:50 pm to 8:05 pm every Monday through Friday.
I don’t want to miss Cardo and his new anti-crime task force in action!
