Guimaras Tricycle Driver Killed in Drive By Shooting

Rufo (Dodong) Tahum was a quiet man. He drove a tricycle for years on our island province of Guimaras.  He also kept many fighting roosters and attended scores of cockfights in his lifetime. Unfortunately for him, he never made it to his last cockfight.

The tricycle driver was killed around 12:30 pm Saturday, January 19, 2019. Reportedly on his way to San Lorenzo where a fiesta and cockfight was being held.  The attack occurred in Barangay Bugnay, Guimaras.

A passenger, Stephen Mondia, 23, survived the drive by shooting.  He suffered a gun shot wound to the leg. Mondia was the victim’s cousin.

Unknown assailants in a black  Mitsubishi Montero Sport SUV with dark-tinted windows sprayed the tricycle driver as they overtook Tahum’s trike.

Personally, I had met the man twice, only briefly, as we used to regularly use tricycles for transportation until we purchased our Ford Ranger.

According to SPO4 Jeffrey Millam of the Jordan Police Station, the incident is currently under investigation.

The Daily Guardian reports that last year, the victim was charged for murder for allegedly killing another man while drinking liquor in Jordan, Guimaras. His son was arrested but Tahum escaped. He was later charged through regular filing in court but a warrant of arrest had yet to be issued against him.

According to reports, he used to work for a local politician.

He was also linked to the killing of two police officers years ago. However, no case was ever filed against him.
