Pretty Pinays Populate Philippines Pageant

Beauty contests in the Philippines are as common as cow poop on our local roads. Even before Pia Wurtzbach, a German-Filipino model, won the 2015 Miss Universe title, pageant competitions were extremely popular. “Pretty Pinays Populate Philippines Pageant” documents a recent  visit my lovely asawa and I made to a local beauty contest, Miss Talangban 2018. Talangban is located in the municipality of Sibunag, Guimaras.

Here Comes the Judge

Not only were “Pretty Pinays Populate Philippines Pageant” in attendance, but so was my own beauty queen, my spouse, seen on the left in the next photo, and her youngest sister Alida. My sister-in-law was one of the six judges invited to the event. Our niece, DenDen, Alida’s daughter, is on the far right.

DenDen participated in a beauty pageant, “Search for Mr and Miss YES-O-MODEL 2016 ” at her high school. It was the first competition our niece had entered. She was awarded 3rd Runner-Up in addition to being named “Miss Popularity.”

Miss Talangban 2018 was to begin at 4:30 pm but due to a rain delay, wasn’t able to start until two hours later, 6:30 pm. It was part of a fiesta celebration held in a nearby barangay.

Alida, Director and Proprietor of Guimaras Joyful School, can be seen in the next photo looking over the profiles of the five young ladies entered in the beauty competition. Due to the bad weather, she was only one of two judges present before the start of the pageant.

However, as the crowds entered, after paying an individual 20 peso, 40¢, admission fee, more judges showed up at the judging table. An official tabulator, seen in the next photo in a blue jacket, was a local teacher.

There were five young ladies in the Miss Talangban 2018 Beauty Pageant. The five pretty pinays were located throughout various municipalities of Guimaras. Residing in Talangban was not an official requirement of the competition.

The young Filipinas displayed different attire throughout the three hour program such as Trend Wear, Summer Wear, Street Wear and Evening Gowns. Intermissions from several dance groups, including two solo lady boy performances, were scattered throughout the event to allow for the different outfit changes.

The official emcee, Mark, seen in the next photo, did a good job of hosting the event. Three different sets of “special awards,” which featured various sponsors, were also interspersed during the competition. “Miss SunSilk,” “Miss Avon,” “Miss Vaseline, and”Miss Tupperware” were among some of the sponsors. I was quick to add my own sarcastic remarks to my asawa and niece after certain sponsor awards were handed out.

Following are some pictures of the five pretty pinays competing in the beauty pageant.

The crowd was revved up when the final stage of Miss Talangban 2018 was announced, the Evening Gown Competition. The talent portion of the contest was already completed and after the ladies displayed their amazing gowns, the final Q&A would close the competition.

The Question and Answer portion included one inappropriate question, which was already prepared ahead of time, in my opinion:

“What is your favorite body part?” The astute contestant instantly replied with the perfect response: “Heart.”

Finally, the 1st Runner-up and Winner were about to be named. The two young ladies, seen above, shook hands with each other before the final announcement was made.

The winner? Appropriately enough, it was “#1”, Ms. Terry Ann De la Peña.

First runner-up was a relative of my spouse, the gracious and beautiful Ms. Pearl Angelie Gange.

Ms.  Peña is shown in the photo above with my lovely asawa. Miss Talangban 2018 was also kind enough to have her picture taken with “The Crusty Old Expat.”

After my better half snapped my picture with the newly crowned Guimaras beauty queen my wife asked:

“Do you know how old that girl is?”

“No,” I replied.

I was shocked! I’m six feet tall. However, not only did the young woman’s height impress me, it was the maturity for her age she displayed. Poised, talented, and intelligent, along with being a young beauty. I’m sure she has many more beauty pageants wins in her future.

(The other contestants were age 14 and all did an admirable job in this contest.)
