Decades ago I was in the United States Air Force military police. Maybe that’s why I always make it a point to be sociable to peace officers no matter where I’m at but especially in the Philippines. I’ve met quite a few friendly police men and security guards in nearby Iloilo on Panay Island and on our own island province. So I guess it shouldn’t come as a complete shock to my readers when I post a title such as the one above: “I Join the Guimaras SWAT Team at Manggahan.”
The Ford Ranger XLT 4×2 Automatic is our new truck in the Philippines. After not owning, or driving, our own vehicle since moving to the Philippines over five years ago we have finally purchased our own personal transportation. WHAT??? But wait a minute. Regular readers of Philippines Plus must be scratching their heads (or their butts, if you prefer), wondering why in the world we bought the Ford. Didn’t I publish a post a few weeks ago regarding an initial unpleasant visit to the local dealership in Iloilo?
I’ve lived in the Philippines for nearly five years. I’ve dutifully made my annual report to my local Bureau of Immigration Office in Iloilo City as required by law.
Living with Lolo, my father-in-law, is an adventure. The 81-year-old grandfather is suffering from Alzheimer’s. He spends his days outside sweeping or pulling weeds. It keeps his mind occupied. Lolo will talk to Fernando Poe, Jr. or spontaneously sing songs he has composed. Most times he is content to do that.
I'm a burger aficionado. Growing up in the Fifties in a small town, Mt. Olive, Illinois, greasy burgers became part of my DNA. Mom would mix lumps of bread to extend the meal (I grew up with two younger brothers) and fry it in a huge floating lump of lard. But my real love for this beef-on-a-bun-treat began when my parents would load us into the old Studebaker and bring us to the A&W Root Beer stand outside of Litchfield.
Tom Ramberg. He’s one of my funniest commentators on PhilippinesPlus. His twisted, wicked sense of humor appeals to me. When he sent me an email recently wanting to know if I would like to publish the occasional article to this website, I was off quicker than a prom dress to dash him a reply in the affirmative. Tom had been answering an email where I had wondered what had happened to the material he had recently posted on a new blog he had started (more on that later in his article.) I am thrilled and honored to have the opportunity to publish his nuggets of humor and wisdom. Here’s Tom’s initial offering sprinkled throughout with his own unique witticisms, anecdotes, and useful advice.

Time to wrap up the recent visit to Manila for this American expat with some photos from the trip. I ran a story about a visit to the Island Cove Resort outside of Cavite where my brother-and-sister-in-law treated us to a day of food, fishing and fun. I mentioned in the article that my brother-in-law, … Read moreThe Beauty in Manila Revealed
Now before some of my regular commentators on PhilippinesPlus.com" leave a disparaging remark that this post title should read "I'm a DUD in the Philippines!," let me assure you, oh, intelligent and obviously gifted reader (since you're visiting this website) that the title is no misprint at all.
