“SM City North EDSA Expat Experience” relates our latest shopping adventure in the Philippines. It was a chaotic shopping trip. I was almost convinced Filipinos in Manila had started their Christmas shopping early. After all, the Philippines has the longest Christmas season in the world and begins September 1st.
Decades ago I was in the United States Air Force military police. Maybe that’s why I always make it a point to be sociable to peace officers no matter where I’m at but especially in the Philippines. I’ve met quite a few friendly police men and security guards in nearby Iloilo on Panay Island and on our own island province. So I guess it shouldn’t come as a complete shock to my readers when I post a title such as the one above: “I Join the Guimaras SWAT Team at Manggahan.”
I don’t like people that butt in line. Regular readers of “Philippines Plus” might recall past rants involving my issues with Filipinos, well-known for “Filipino Time,” who are nonetheless in a hurry and push ahead of others in a queue. I’ve been living in the Philippines for close to six years now, and while the vast majority of Pinoys and Pinays are polite, respectful and friendly, there are those that believe it is alright to practice “line jumping.” So when a middle-aged Filipina butted in front of two senior ladies the other day at Robinsons Supermarket Package Counter, this incident sparked the “Americanization” of the two Lola’s (Grandmothers.)
I’m a Midwest boy that loves his burgers and fries. As an American expat living in the Philippines for almost five years now, I’ve had my share of burgers. Crave Burgers and grilled hamburgers from the Mesquite Grill in Iloilo are some of the best burgers I’ve ever tasted. Now I add Flame It! Burger in Cebu City to that best burger list.
Beers. A babe. And Guimaras. The only element in abundance during my recent visit to the mango province with The Tom Cat a week ago last Friday was beer. And rain. A deluge that dogged us all day. But my American expat friend and I dodged our usual dives and headed for a posh hotel at the New Site in San Miguel, Zemkamps Chalet, after a lunch at our favorite eatery, Lisa's Talabahan.
So many cute filipinas in attendance at the recent Manggahan Festival in Guimaras. Further proof for you single guys that you’re truly missing out on meeting some of the most beautiful women in the world if you’ve never visited the Philippines. Plenty of pretty pinays parading around at the annual provincial party. Here are some of the lovely ladies that I met. I apologize to my faithful readers. I’m also in some of the shots.
