Grand Guimaras Garden Reflections

Grand Guimaras Garden Reflections

While checking out some recycled flower pots hanging from one of our cashew trees, I decided to take the following photographs of my better half’s spacious garden.  If you live in the Philippines, we moved here from Central Illinois almost nine years ago, you can have a garden 365 days a year. For a gardening fanatic like my wife, seen in the next photo with her long-sleeved work clothes, it’s a dream come true.

New Guimaras Hypermarket Operating on “Filipino Time”

After nearly nine years of living in the Philippines, one would think I would have adjusted to “Filipino Time” by now. In some instances, I have. Nevertheless, there are occasions where this maddening Filipino custom raises my blood pressure to the upper stratosphere. Case in point, today’s post: New Guimaras Hypermarket Operating on “Filipino Time.”

New Gaisano Mall Iloilo City’s Ho-Hum Experience

I’m cognizant of the fact that I’m negative at times. I’m not the official cheerleader for the Philippines Tourism Department. It’s my goal to present my personal perspective as an American expat living in the Philippines in an objective manner. I’ll give credit where credit is due. When something stinks, like the wastewater pipelines buried in Boracay beaches, I’ll address those issues, also. Therefore, I present the following post: “New Gaisano Mall Iloilo City’s Ho-Hum Experience.”

CONCLUSION: Philippines Vehicle Registration Ruckus

CONCLUSION: Philippines Vehicle Registration Ruckus. My asawa and I were heading out to our local Land Transportation Office, LTO, in Guimaras. After being told by a local insurance agent that our truck registration had expired last March, we had to sort the matter out. After reviewing our paperwork from LTO, I was under the impression our Ford Ranger’s registration didn’t end until later this month.

Simbang Gabi Kicks Off Jesus’ Birthday Party

Easter Mass Trappist Monastery Guimaras

Simbang Gabi has begun in the Philippines. This Catholic celebration kicks off Jesus’ Birthday Party in the archipelago. But don’t expect cake and ice cream for this celebration. However, food stalls are located right outside the church offering such popular Filipino favorites such as puto bumbong (sticky rice pastry), bibingka (rice cake) and salabat (ginger tea) or tsokolate (hot chocolate.)

Simple Man. Simple Life.

American expat in the Philippines. A Simple Man. A Simple Life. No one has threatened to kill me recently. I’ve only had to yell at one jeepney operator blocking our main street in downtown San Miguel, Guimaras, the other day. No trips to nearby Iloilo City in about a month. I wish I could report more exciting events but I can’t.

10 Best Places to Visit in the Philippines

“10 Best Places to Visit in the Philippines” consists of the results of over 30 websites that I scrutinized using four different search engines. The compilation of this Top Ten List looked at other websites and their choices for the best places to visit in the archipelago.  More weight was given for picks that finished first, second and third. Each destination listed was given at least one vote.  Only the Top Ten picks of each website were given consideration. The websites I covered were everything from CNN to USA Today along with international and local publications.

8-Year Goal Realized: Skipping Iloilo and Shopping Local

sm city lrg

Regular consumers of “Philippines Plus” know that I’m a crusty old expat. Sure, I could pretend that I never get irritated and that I’m always whistling “Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah.” But sometimes that bluebird on my shoulder takes a crap. However, not today, O True Believers, for on this Sunday, October 15th, 2017, an 8-year goal has been realized. Yes, we are skipping Iloilo City and doing the bulk of our shopping on our island province of Guimaras.  My asawa can now take our Aurora Blue Ford Ranger into the local market on our island province since our Governor and his Provincial Engineering Office took care of repairing our former muddy, rut-ridden road.
